Yoga for Beginners Series
Are you interested in yoga but don't know where to start? Want to know the difference between an "ustrasana" and an "utkatasana"? Don't know whether you like restorative or vinyasa yoga? This series focused on the fundamentals of yoga is designed for beginners of all ages. Participants will learn basic yoga philosophy, terminology, principles, and studio etiquette. Most of the series will focus on how to correctly practice basic yoga postures (known as "asanas" in yoga) and the benefits associated with these asanas. The series will survey multiple styles of yoga, enabling students to make more informed and confident choices when choosing their yoga practice in a studio environment. Classes are kept small so that participants have the opportunity to ask questions, "workshop" and learn modifications for various poses, and receive individual feedback about their form and alignment. This is an ideal series for anyone new to yoga who wants to build a strong foundation and ease in to the practice in a supportive, safe, and fun environment.
Accupressure Self Massage (4 Week Series)
In this 4-week workshop, we will use a combination of acupressure and myofascial release to reduce inflammation, increase range of motion, and reduce pain and tightness. What, exactly, are acupressure and myofascial release? Acupressure is a form of touch therapy similar to acupuncture--but without the use of needles. Instead, we will use balls to stimulate points to promote relaxation and wellness. Myofascial release is a treatment that releases tension in the fascia caused by injury, poor posture, dehydration, or inflammation.
You will need: Your mat and the balls if you have already purchased a set. A 24-36" foam roller is optional for week 4.
We will focus on a different part of the body each week:
Week 1: Hands and feet. Did you know there are pressure points in the hands and feet that will release the neck and hips? We will focus on 5 specific points to increase mobility and improve balance.
Week 2: Hips and legs. This week the focus is on the lower part of our body. We will do a quick review of the feet and then move into the calves, hamstrings, IT band, and glutes. If you have knee or lower back pain, this week is for you!
Week 3: Shoulders and ribs. This week the focus is on the upper part of our body. We will do a quick review of the hands and then move into the pecs, lats, and ribs to improve range of motion in the shoulders and counteract the effects from the computer, cell phone, and gravity on the thoracic spine.
Week 4: Putting it all together. The final week we will do a total-body release with emphasis on the neck, jaw, and spine. In addition, we will go over a breathing routine that will open the lungs and calm the mind to promote a sense of overall well-being.
